Patient Stories

Sue

Everyone has heard that song "I've been everywhere man" - well that's my weight loss story. I have been to every possible weight loss centre & program only to loose some kilos and then put twice as many back on.

My final stop is with Mr Jon Armstrong and this time I know I am going to succeed. Since having a gastric sleeve operation in October 2008, I have lost 60 kilos and whilst only just over half way, I know I am going to loose the rest of the weight and I am going to keep it off.

Since having the operation I have noticed a great improvement in my sleeping pattern - I used to wake every 1 to 1 ½ hrs, but now I will sleep solidly for 5 to 6 hrs. The snoring and stirring has just about disappeared. Better sleep combined with the weight lose has given me a lot more energy and I can now do things without the huff and puff. The other thing that is really noticeable is that people don't stare at me anymore - I fit in a lot better and of course I can now go shopping and have access to all the "normal" clothes and sizes.

I would say to anyone considering the lap banding or the gastric sleeve take the opportunity and do it - you will never look back. The operation is a tremendous help and virtually guarantees weight lose, but you still need to work at a few things - get your mind right ie: change your eating habits by eating slower, eat better food and stop when you feel full. Don't drink and eat at the same time and of course do some moderate exercise.

When you decide to have the operation, don't panic like I did. I had nightmares about being to big, the staff not being able to move me in the operating theatre, the pressure stockings not fitting. I can reassure you I panicked for no reason - this is an operation for bigger people and everyone is fully trained and equipped to look after you.

The only negative (if you can call it a negative) is the cost of having to buy new clothes, but you soon see this as another positive when look in the mirror and feel proud of the new you.

My heartfelt thanks to Mr. Armstrong, Laura Kiely (dietician) and Penny Boon (reception) for their support and understanding.
